Home visit, studio or gym: where to train with a personal trainer
Where you train affects the price, the equipment you can use and how easy it is to keep going. Here's how the options compare in Singapore, with figures from the trainers listed here.
At home
The trainer comes to you and brings light equipment such as bands, kettlebells and mats. It's the most convenient option and suits busy schedules, new parents and anyone who'd rather not train in public. The trade-off is limited equipment, and some trainers add a travel charge. 109 trainers on this directory, middle published price S$90 a session.
Trainers who come to your home
In your condo gym
Many condos have a gym with racks, dumbbells and machines, and most allow residents to bring a trainer, though some ask for registration or charge a fee, so check with your management office first. You get more equipment than at home without travelling. 99 trainers on this directory.
Trainers who train in condo gyms
At a personal training studio
Studios are built for one-to-one training, so you get good equipment, a quieter space and usually a team of trainers. Many offer a free or discounted trial. They're often in the CBD and central areas, so check the location suits your commute. 259 trainers on this directory.
At a commercial gym
Big gym chains have their own personal trainers, and some independent trainers rent space at a partner gym. You'll usually need a membership as well as paying for sessions, but you can train on your own between sessions with the same equipment. 11 trainers on this directory, middle published price S$90 a session.
Outdoors
Parks and fitness corners work well for conditioning, running and bodyweight training, and can cost less. Singapore's heat and rain mean early mornings or evenings, and a plan for wet days. 9 trainers on this directory.
Online
Live video sessions or a programme with regular check-ins. It usually costs less than in-person sessions and works well once you know your way around a gym, less so if you need hands-on coaching on technique. 12 trainers on this directory.
Choosing
- New to training? A studio or a gym where the trainer can watch your technique closely is a good start.
- Short on time? Home or condo sessions cut out travel, which makes it easier to keep going.
- Want to train on your own too? A gym with a trainer lets you use the same space between sessions.
