Questions to ask a personal trainer before you book
A good trainer will be happy to answer all of these, usually at a trial session or on a short call. Their answers tell you more than any profile can.
About them
- Which certification do you hold, and from which body? Ask to see it. Common certifications explained.
- Are you on NREP? It's voluntary, so a "no" isn't a red flag on its own, but you can check a "yes" yourself. How to check NREP.
- Do you have a current first aid, CPR and AED certificate?
- Are you insured if something goes wrong during a session?
About your goal
- Have you worked with people like me? For example someone new to training, recovering from an injury, pregnant or postnatal, or over 60.
- What would the first month look like? A clear answer about assessment, a plan and how it changes is a good sign.
- How will we measure progress? Strength, how you feel, measurements or photos: whatever suits you, agreed up front.
- What do you expect me to do between sessions? Most results come from what happens outside the hour you spend together.
- If I have a medical condition or an injury, will you want a note from my doctor or physio? A careful trainer will often say yes.
About the sessions
- Where do we train? Their studio, a gym, your condo gym, outdoors or online. Where to train with a PT.
- How long is a session, and how often should I come?
- Is it one-to-one, or will other clients be training at the same time?
- Who will I actually train with? At a studio, ask whether you'll keep the same trainer.
- What happens if I need to cancel or reschedule? How much notice, and do I lose the session?
About money
- What's the price per session, on its own and in a package? What trainers in Singapore charge.
- Are there extra costs? Travel to your home, gym entry, assessments or equipment.
- When does a package expire, and can it be paused, transferred or refunded? Packages, contracts and refunds.
- Can I have the terms in writing before I pay?
Things that should make you pause
- Pressure to sign up for a large package on the day, or a "today only" price.
- Promises of a set amount of weight lost by a set date.
- Selling supplements or diet products as part of the deal.
- Vague answers about qualifications, or reluctance to put terms in writing.
